Through Soul Searching's prologue and the voice of the book's narrator Gayle Stanford, the reader is challenged with the idea that a soul could abruptly exit one lifetime and travel into its next lifetime, split between two people. In modern day Seattle, Soul Searching explores such possibilities through the life lessons and challenges of its main character, Bess Stokes.
Bess is born with a twin brother, Jess, with whom she never quite makes the typical twin connections. She is haunted by an emptiness she cannot explain. She traverses the early years of her life coming to grips with the insecurities that limit her relationships and accepting the realization that she is a lesbian.
Her attempts to find love and fill her emptiness lead Bess through the trials and betrayals of friends and lovers, until she finds Lucy, her soul mate.
