Mary K. Roper has more than a knack for story-telling. She drowns you in the most delicious details of the connections, losses and joys of several intelligent, sensitive women.
Ms. Roper's main character, Bess, is not very likable at first. The reader wonders about her self-esteem and basic wherewithal to deal with the realities of life. How odd it is then, when we find out that Bess is wondering the same things herself.
Intricately woven, SOUL SEARCHING recognizes the need to have to connect, to belong, to thrive--only to recognize that those connections and belongings often have little to do with what we think they'll be, and thriving is never as simple or easy as we hope.
Roper questions the very constitution of intimate relationship. She goes beyond the boundary of what is expected, what is convivial in our fantasy filled minds and what we still believe - in spite of all obvious evidence to the contrary.
If you've ever wondered, if you've ever felt that tug from beyond - SOUL SEARCHING will take you to the precipice of your belief chasm…jumping off is up to you.
They shouldn't be allowed to call this fiction. Quite simply the best novel I've read in years.
